Abstract

Drying oil compositions suitable for use in conjunction with abrasive fillers, e.g. silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, emery, sand or marble dust or with fibrous fillers, e.g. ground cork, rubber, chlorinated rubber, wood flour, ground walnut shells, asbestos, cotton, sisal, hemp, or mineral wool for the production of hard wearing surfaces, e.g. stair treads and like non-slip surfaces, are obtained by mixing a composition derived from a drying oil and an oil soluble resin, e.g. a phenol aldehyde resin, which composition has been advanced in the presence of a control agent until it is at least 30 per cent insoluble in acetone, as described in Specification 491,519 with a thermoplastic cellulose ether or polyvinyl compound soluble in aromatic thinning agents; ethyl and benzyl cellulose and polymerised esters of methacrylic acid or polyvinyl esters of polystyrene are specified. The polyvinyl compound is preferably partially hydrolysed. Rosin, ester gums, coumarone, chlorinated rubber, fatty oil modified alkyd resins, gilsonite, may be added. In examples, a coating composition is obtained, (1) by mixing 25 parts of a 24 per cent solution in toluol of a 9 per cent hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate with 33 parts of a drying oil composition prepared as described in example 1 of Specification 491,519, and dissolved in 33 parts toluol; (3) the composition obtained may be mixed with a 60 per cent solution in toluol of an oil modified alkyd resin; (8) a stair tread covering is obtained by mixing the composition of (1) with aluminium oxide abrasive and asbestos fibres or slag wool.
