Abstract

653,343. Mercury switches : electromagnetic switches. KLASEK, V. April 30,1948, No. 11863. [Class 38(v)] In a switch filled with gas under pressure and having a casing comprising a number of conducting and insulating components, the components are held together by pressure applied externally so as to ,enable the use of a high gas pressure. The Figs. shown a switch having metal rings 3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53, 63, 73 ceramic partitions 2 and end members 1, 11 secured together by bolts 14. Each "pole" of the switch is formed by an adjacent pair of chambers separated by one of the partitions 2 and provided with a rotatable contact-member 5 having a pair of lugs 5<SP>1</SP> which may make contact directly, or by means of mercury pools 6, with the associated pair of rings 3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53, 63, 73. The members 5 are connected together by insulating pieces 8 so as to form a shaft, which may be turned against a spring 15 by an armature 9 moved by a permanent magnet, or, Fig. 5, by an electromagnet 21, 22. The contact-member 5 may be staggered in relation to one another, so that different switching combinations may be arranged. Each partition 2 may be provided with a hore for the insertion of a filling tube, the bores being closed after the filling operation and before charging the switch with gas, by means of an insulating rod 19.' In a modification, the contacts 5 may be fixed in the partitions 2, in which case the switch is operated by rotating it. Alternatively, the connection between the rings may be obtained by the provision of eccentric bores in alternate partitions 2 through which the mercurycan flow when the switch is rotated. In each case the switch unit is supported by blade spring members 7...77, Fig. 5 which provide external connections for the rings 3...73. Gas tight seals between the rings and the partitions are made by soldering the rings to the ceramic partitions after the partitions have been metal sprayed or coated.
