Abstract

653,281. Paper &c. tubes. NEW MERTON BOARD MILLS, Ltd., LENARD, F. P., and METHVEN, G. W. Jan. 19, 1948, No. 1620. [Class 99(ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A tube, which is subsequently cut into lengths for making containers, is made by winding on a mandrel a laminated web consisting of a layer of cardboard or paper 1 united to a layer of aluminium foil 2 by means of a water-soluble casein adhesive. The adhesive used to unite adjacent turns of the laminated web is a starch paste-urea formaldehyde resin adhesive, which, in curing, liberates formaldehyde which insolubilizes the casein adhesive between the aluminium foil and the cardboard. The first layer is wound on the mandrel with the aluminium foil on the inside, the web is-then cut to leave a small overlap, the free end of the web is stuck to the overlap foil side outwards, and the winding is completed. The tube is trimmed and cut into lengths which are stood over infra red lamps to dry and set the paste. The seams are sealed by applying strips 4 and 5 of aluminium foil using a nitrocellulose adhesive which is heat-sealed by applying a hot iron.
