Abstract

653,123. Turning. WARNER & SWASEY CO. July 16, 1948, No. 19117. Convention date, July 24, 1947. [Class 83 (iii)] A bar stock feeding mechanism for an automatic lathe having a plurality of hollow spindles each equipped with a collet chuck 36 and a chuck actuating sleeve 37 comprises a housing 13 supported independently of each spindle and in axial alignment therewith, a stock supporting tube 12 rotatably mounted in the housing in bearings 14, 15 and a removable filler tube 21, which receives the bar stock, keyed to the tube 12 to rotate therewith, the front portion of the tube 21 extending beyond the front ends of the tube 12 and housing 13 to support a slidable gripping finger tube 29 which extends into the sleeve 37 with substantial clearance, the tube 29 being moved axially, when the housing 13 has been indexed to a predetermined position, by means of a reciprocating slide member 35 to feed bar stock through the chuck when the latter is released. Each housing 13 is supported in indexable discs 16, 17, 18 mounted on a shaft 19 which is connected to, or formed as an extension of, the indexable spindle carrier of the lathe. The filler tube is held axially in the tube 12 by means of a retaining ring 25. The rear end of the shaft 19 is supported by one or more standards. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the tube 12 is replaced by a tube the front portion of which extends beyond the front end of the housing to support the finger tube. A filler tube may be used in this modification, if required. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the finger tube may be replaced by a feeding head. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
