Abstract

652,864. Conveyers, rollerway. WILMOT. H., and SMITH, C. ST. V. Feb. 5, 1947, Nos. 3401, 3402, 3403, 3404 and 3405. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group II] In apparatus for metallizing the surfaces of a girder or other bar, the bar 1 is continuously rotated about its axis and moved longitudinally though cleaning, metallizing and passivating compartments 2, 3, 4 by means of conveyer units in compartments 5 at the sides of the compartments 2, 3, 4, each conveyer unit comprising spaced feed rollers 17 which rotate about their own axes and are carried by a structure 18 which rotates bodily whilst the ends of the bar are supported on trollies 21 running on rails 19 and carrying bearing plates 22 which are apertured at 23 to receive the bar. Partitions between the compartments are fitted with air blast means to prevent the contents of the compartments 2, 3, 4 passing into the compartments 5. The structure 18 is rotated by means of an electric motor 231 through a gear-box 232, shaft 233, chain 24 and sprockets 234, 25, whilst the rollers 17 are driven from the structure 18 by gearing 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 36, 37, 38, 39. Rotation of the rollers 17 may be prevented by depressing a control lever 88 to raise a projection 92 from a ratchet wheel 89. The control levers 88 of all the compartments may be operated simultaneously by means of a common shaft 95. The lower roller 17 is biassed towards the upper roller by springs 47, suitable splined connections and sliding seals being provided, and a gap between the rollers is maintained by means of an abutment head 72 engaging a stop plate 73 and set by a handoperated gear-wheel 78. In a modification (Figs. 12-15, not shown), both rollers 17 are biassed towards each other, and the means for limiting the gap between them comprises movable wedges operable from outside the compartment. Each bearing plate 22 is engaged by three rollers 146 in a triangular aperture 141 in a carrier plate 142 provided on each side with a retaining plate 144 with a circular aperture 145 slightly smaller than the bearing plate 22. The plate 142 is mounted between a pair of angle-section members 148 bridged by a plate 150 through which pass rods 151 pivoted at 152 to the plate 142 and provided with adjustable springs 154. The plate 142 may therefore move vertically and, to a limited extent, horizontally. For very heavy bars the trollies may be replaced by additional conveyer units.
