Abstract
652,743. Electrolytic surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. ANOX AKT.-GES. Dec. 23, 1947, No. 33990. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1939. [Class 41] In a process for the electrolytic deposition of opaque layers on aluminium and its alloys the electrolyte contains one or more chromic salts of zinc and/or magnesium and sufficient chromic acid to maintain the salts in solution, the salts being such that the metal from which they are formed does not enter into the composition of the deposited layer and the layer is more opaque and more heat resistant than that which is formed under the same operating conditions, but in the absence of the zinc and/or magnesium salts. The electrolyte may contain for example from 0.5 to 20 per cent of a zinc or magnesium salt. The process may be carried out at a voltage of from 10 to 30 volts, a current density of 1.8 to 2.5 amps. per sq. dcm., and a temperature of 20 to 80 C. Alternating or continuous current may be used.
