[Class 83 (iv)] A crimping-tool comprises opposed jaws pivotally connected intermediate their ends and actuated by a toggle mechanism comprising a lever pivoted at one end to one of the jaws. a link connecting an intermediate point of the lever to the other jaw and means for applying a toggle operating force to the other end of the lever. The main frame of the tool comprises spaced plates 66 and 67, Fig. 2, to the lower ends of which is secured the cylinder 88 of a pneumatic operating device. The other ends of the plates comprise prongs between which bridge members 77 and 78 are secured by means of headed pins 70 and spring clips 71. The crimping- dies 13, 14 are mounted on jaws 72, 73 pivoted between the members 77 and 78 at 75, 76 and actuated by a toggle 80, 81 at their inner ends. - A roller 74 keeps the jaws in longitudinal alignment. Cylinder 88 contains a piston whose rod 87 carries at its upper end a roller adapted to move along slots in the frame plates 66, 67 and which is secured by links 91, 92 to the jaw-actuating toggle. A slight depression of a trigger 123 depresses a plunger 115 so as to close an exhaust port 114 and depress a ball valve 102 so that pressure air from a pipe 96 which leaks past a ball valve 104 may pass by way of a pipe 97 to the cylinder 88 and cause the jaws to move to a position in which they lightly grip the work. Further pressure on the lever moves the ball 102 downwards and causes a hollow stem to press on and open the ball valve 104 thus allowing the full air pressure to operate the piston to apply a crimping pressure to the jaws. In a modified form, the tool is mounted on a bench and the toggle actuated by a pedal. In another modification, Fig. 8, one jaw 11 is integral with a hand grip portion 10 of the tool and the other jaw 17, hinged to the fixed jaw at 19 is operated by a toggle against the action of a spring 25. The rear part of the tool comprises a cylinder 33 containing a piston 35 with a forwardly projecting block 39 adapted, on the forward movement of the piston, to abut and move a roll 31 at the end of an extension of one of the toggle levers 21. On the inward movement of a lever 27 which normally projects through a slot 29 in the handle portion 10, a piece 28 integral with the lever bears on the toggle lever 21 so that the jaw 17 is moved into a position to grip the work lightly. Depression of a trigger 44 projecting from the lever 27 operates through a lever 47 and rod 49 to open a ball valve 53 to admit fluid pressure to the cylinder and so apply dimpling pressure to the upper jaw. In a modification the lever 27 and trigger 44 are replaced by a single lever with a spring hinge portion so that on pressing the lever gripping pressure is applied to the jaws and then the hinge portion of the lever bends to allow the operation of the rod controlling the ball valve.
