Abstract

651,771. Thermal regenerators. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. June 12, 1946, No. 17642. Divided out of 636,666. [Class 64(i)] In a rotary regenerator in which, a rotatable heat-absorbing annulus 1, drum or disc transfers heat from turbine gases to compressed air in passages which are separated from one another by a partition 15, 16 which is asymmetrically disposed so that the compressed air flows through the smaller exposed area of the annulus &c. and the turbine gases through the larger' area, the partition or a part 15 thereof is movable automatically in response to a change in at least one operating condition of the regenerator, to vary the ratio of the exposed areas. In the form shown, changes in the pressure difference of the turbine gases and air move a diaphragm 31 which moves an arm 33 over a resistance 34 and so controls the current supply to an electric motor 37 which moves the partition section 15. The ends of the partition may be sealed against the annulus by rollers or by an endless flexible band running on pulleys. A similar endless band may be provided between the casing 8 and the annulus 1.
