Abstract

Alkaline crude coal tar acids are neutralized by a process in which a predetermined volume of the crude alkaline tar acids (of known alkalinity) is mixed with excess dilute sulphuric acid to form two layers, the concentration of the sulphuric acid being so selected that the ratio of the volumes of the layers is not less than 1 : 10 nor greater than 1 : 1. The acid layer after strengthening may be recycled, when it will contain sodium sulphate. Free acid left in the tar acid may be neutralized with the theoretical amount of crude alkaline tar mixture. An example is given.
