Abstract

Vermiculite, for use in the manufacture of concrete blocks &c., is mixed with a waterproofing agent consisting of oleic acid and trichlorethylene, preferably in the proportions of 20 : 80 by volume, in order to reduce the amount of water required to hydrate the cement. The vermiculite is soaked in approximately half its volume of the mixture and the trichlorethylene is subsequently recovered by distillation. Three volumes of the treated vermiculite are mixed with one volume of cement and the normal quantity of water.
