Abstract
651,705. Sanitary and hygienic devices. JESSUP, V. C., and ROBERTS, D. M. Dec. 23, 1948, No. 33178. [Class 40 (iv)] The mouthpiece of a telephone receiver is automatically sprayed with disinfectant when it engages and depresses a rubber cup-like spraying member 33 as the receiver is returned to its position of rest. In one arrangement, the member 33 is mounted on the plunger 18 of a pump which drives the disinfectant through an axial bore 25 in the plunger and through orifices 23 in the spraying member. The container 14 for the pump and the disinfectant may be attached either to the telephone base 10 or to a tray on which the base rests. The pump comprises a piston 27, a cylinder 32 and a non- return valve 30, the disinfectant being fed to the cylinder through a radial bore (Fig. 3, not shown). In a second arrangement, the disinfectant is pumped by means of a rubber ball which is compressed when the plunger is depressed. In a third arrangement, the disinfectant is fed by gravity and the plunger operates a valve to control the spray. In any of these arrangements, the disinfectant may be fed to an absorbent pad in the spraying member 33. The disinfectant may be sprayed only when the receiver has been removed and replaced a predetermined number of times.
