Abstract
651,569. Screw fans. AEREX, Ltd. (Aerex (Australia) Co.). Nov. 24, 1949, No. 30138. [Class 110(i)] A screw fan impeller hub comprises a number of rim segments a each formed with a socket b for the reception of the root c of a fan blade d and each connected to a central hub boss e. Each socketed segment can be cast integrally with its tubular spoke f. Each blade root c is screwed into a cup h-and secured by a set screw i. The cup h is carried by a shaft j having at its inner end a pinion o engaging a rack q. All the racks extend between two annular pistons r which are interconnected by a distance piece t. The cylindrical head p<SP>2</SP> of a screw p which is tapped into the end of each shaft has a sleeve roller v which engages slidably with a groove in the distance piece t. Pressure fluid is admitted to and discharged from an anular cylinder s by way of pipes w<SP>1</SP>, w<SP>2</SP> to move the pistons and so adjust the pitch of the blades d. Leakage is dealt with by packing washers x, y<SP>1</SP> and z and non-return flap valves r<SP>1</SP>. The spokes f may be replaced by annular disc. The racks may be replaced by a crown wheel, or alternatively each shaft j may carry a crank arm engaging an axially displaceable slotted block.
