Abstract

A coating and impregnating composition, especially for leather, comprises an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and styrene containing 1 to 60 per cent of styrene and a non-polar poasticizer, i.e. a compound having a low polarity and comprising a polar group and a hydrocarbon chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl acetyl-, butyl acetyl- and methyl phthalyl-methyl ricinoleates, dibutyl sebacate and di-(ethylhexyl)-phthalates. The plasticizer may be added to the monomeric mixture before or after emulsification and subsequent polymerization, e.g. as described in Specification 607,704, or it may be emulsified with the copolymer emulsion, e.g. as a separate emulsion. Examples describe the emulsion polymerization of equal weights of methyl methacrylate and styrene in the presence of the plasticizer and (1) wool wax alcohols, sodium lauryl sulphate and hydrogen peroxide; (2), (3), (4) sodium persulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate, the sodium methacrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer described in Specification 648,001 and aqueous ammonia; (5) the sodium salt of dibutyl naphthalene sulphonic acid; and (6) a sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate in place of sodium lauryl sulphate.
