Abstract

651,119. Machinery guards. BRITISH CERAMIC RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, GUTHRIE, P., and GOODSON, F. J. Dec. 2,1948, No. 31181. [Class 80(iv)] Both hands of an operator are required to release the starting and interlocking mechanism of a semi-automatic poweroperated screw press, which latter mechanism tends to prevent the working stroke. As shown, a press slide 10 is reciprocated by a screw 11 connected with a wheel 26 driven in either direction by wheels 24, 25 axially movable under the control of a lever 20 fixed to a shaft 30 and connected to a starting handle 50 by a rod 51. The interlocking means comprises a pin 13 having a conical head or collar 14 carried by the slide 10. When the press is at rest the head 14 is held within calliper jaws 38, which are opened to permit a working stroke of the press by a cam mechanism connected by a linkwork 41-43 to an interlocking handle 44 and loaded by a spring 40 to the closed position. Should the handle 44 not be operated when a working stroke is commenced by the starting handle 50, initial movement of the slide 10 carries with it the jaws 38 and hence a control rod 35 and a lever 31 also secured to the shaft 30, thereby reversing the direction of drive and returning the slide to its starting position. The Provisional Specification describes a converse construction in which flexible cable controlled jaws carried by the slide coact with an abutment carried by the press starting mechanism.
