Abstract
650,892. Automatic control systems, power factor; supply systems for induction furnaces. BIRLEC, Ltd., and MAY, E. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 4997. [Class 38 (iv)] The power factor of a H.F. induction furnace, having a heating coil 1 supplied by an alternator is controlled by varying the speed of the alternator in accordance with variations of the power factor from unity so as to tend to maintain the power factor at unity. Deviations of the power factor are detected by a device 5 operating a servo device or relay 6 which controls the speed of a motor 4 driving the alternator 3. For further control, condensers in parallel with the heating coil may be automatically or manually cut into or out of circuit. In a further embodiment employing a constant speed motor (Fig. 2, not shown), variation of speed of the alternator may be effected by speed-change gear in the motor drive.
