Abstract

Natural rubber is preserved by incorporating therein a 2,4,6-trialkyl phenol, in which the 4-alkyl group is ethyl, methyl or butyl, and the 2- and 6-alkyl groups are propyl, butyl, or amyl. Preferred compounds are 2,4,6-tributyl phenol and 2,6-dibutyl-4-methyl phenol. In examples which are directed chiefly to the production of white or pastel coloured articles, from 0.25 to 5.0 parts of the trialkyl phenol is added to every 100 parts of the natural rubber. Other ingredients in the examples are sulphur, sulphur monochloride, zinc oxide, clay, lithopone, barytes, blanc fixe, titanium dioxide, whiting, zinc stearate, magnesium carbonate, wax, rouge, chrome green, chrome yellow, vermillion, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, stearic acid, benzothiazyl disulphide, mercaptobenzthiazole, zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, zinc salt of mercaptobenzthiazole, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, and heptaldehyde aniline. The mixtures are particularly suitable for light coloured walls for vehicle tyres.
