Abstract
650,530. Printing-machines. OXVAR, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 14170/50. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1939. Divided out of 650,474. [Class 100 (ii)] Printing on curved surfaces ; rotary offset machines, ; inking apparatus ; set-off, preventing.-Articles with rigid external surfaces are fed towards a pattern transfer roll at a speed of translation slower than the peripheral roll speed, and are accelerated to the latter speed only when in operative contact with the roll. As shown in Fig. 2 (elevation), the work W, e.g. a cabinet having vertical sides, is mounted on a workholder 80 whose guide rail 81 rests on a table 14 and passes between a roller 82 and a gear 83 engaging a toothed rack or chain 87 to drive the work past a vertical transfer roll 12 receiving a pattern from a roll 11 carrying an intaglio printing plate. The top bearing for the roll 11, and for a shaft carrying the brackets 24 of the transfer roll 12 (see (a) below), are formed in a plate 21 supported on pillars from the frame 10. The shaft 20 of the roll 11 (driven by a motor 41 through reduction gearing 43, a chain 45, and bevel gears 48, 49) carries three sprockets 50, 76, 130 which transmit the drive respectively (a) to the transfer roll 12, (b) to a cam for axially reciprocating a pair of doctor blades spring-pressed onto the rolls 11, 12, and (c) to a slow-moving work-advancing lug 151 (Fig. 5) ; drives are also taken (d) from the sprocket 69 through a manually-operated dog clutch and an eccentric pin to a pump delivering ink to the top of the roll 11, and (e) through a chain drive 90, clutch 91, 100, and bevel gears 94, 95 to the gear 83, this latter clutch being operated by movement of the supporting bracket 86 of the roller 82 and gear 83. (a) The shaft 23 of the transfer roll 12 is carried in brackets 24 connected by a tiebar and pivoted on a shaft coaxial with a gear of the driving train from the sprocket 50 ; the brackets are spring-loaded against adjusting screws for setting the roll 12 accurately against the roll 11. (c) The lug 151 of the work-advancing device shown in Fig. 5 is carried on an endless chain 150, and when the workholder 80 is manually pressed against a guide rail tangential to the roll 12 the lug 151 engages an adjustable block 152 and advances the leading edge W2 of the work towards the roll 12 but more slowly than the peripheral speed of the latter. (e) The axis of the gear 83 is slightly offset from the line joining the centres of the roller 82 and roll 12 (see Fig. 5), to enable the corners of the work to be negotiated without smudging ; the clutch member 91 revolves 1 : 1 with the roll 11, the single recess therein engaged by the clutch-tooth 101 thus corresponding to a particular line across the pattern ; the bracket 86, connected by rods 107 to the clutch ring 105, is slid along horizontal guideways 102 by manually-operated pinion and rack gearing 116, 117 and unless the tooth 101 is in register with the recess in the clutch member 91 it rides upon the face of the latter and holds the work clear of the roll 12 ; this subject-matter forms the subject of Specification 650,474.
