Abstract

244,156. Murray, J. Sept. 9, 1924. Rotary machines.-A rotary machine for printing book signatures is constructed with a single main frame on which the printing, folding, and inking cylinders are supported in a manner to permit of ready lateral withdrawal, and to permit of ready access to the parts. Preferably a perfecting printing-couple and associated parts are mounted on either side of a single main frame, so that two sets of different signatures are produced. As shown in Fig. 1, the printing- couples 7, 9, 8, 10 are mounted on trunnions 3 - - 6 integral with or secured to the upper part 1 of a frame 1, 2, in the lower part of which a series of rotary folding-cylinders 16 - - 20 are mounted on trunnions 11 - - 15 in a manner to permit of lateral withdrawal. The printing- cylinders are mounted on sleeves supported by roller bearings and secured by screw-caps. The web to be printed is fed from a reel 24, and is preferably unwound by rollers 22, 23 and automatically controlled as described in Specification 195,750, [Class 100 (i), Feeding and delivering webs &c.]. The web passes over guide rollers 26, 27, a tensioning pulley 28, a guide roller 29, a guide plate 31, and guide rollers 32, 33 to the first printing-couple, then over an adjusting-roller 35 to the second printing-couple, and finally over adjusting-pulleys 27, 39 to the folding cylinders 16 - - 20. Driving printing-machines. - Each perfecting couple is driven from a motor 94 or 95, Fig. 1, arranged on a bracket 96 supported by the frame 1. The impression cylinders are geared to wheels 98, 100, which are geared together, the gear 98 being driven from the motor by neduction gearing, which may be worm gearing, arranged in a gear box. Set-off, printing.-The second impression cylinder 10, Fig. 1, is operated on by cleaning brushes 40, 41 of rubber covered with soft card-wire, and supplied with cleaning-fluid from a duct roller 46 by an oscillating roller 43. Inking-apparatus.-The printing-cylinders 7, 8, Fig. 1, are inked by rollers 60, 61 carried in frames 62 supported by links 63, 64, which can be adjusted to move the rollers out of contact with the forme by means of eccentrics 65 operated by hand-cranks 68 geared to the eccentrics. Each link 64 is pivoted to a main bracket 47 or 48 for the inking-apparatus, and is connected to a link 67 mounted on an eccentric 66 operated by a gear 69 with holes for receiving a tommy-bar. On the main brackets 47, 48 are mounted inkducts with rollers 49 driven by epioyclic gearing 50 and spur gears 51 from the printing-cylinders. The rollers 60, 61 are supported by distributing- rollers 55 - - 59, and an oscillating messenger roller 52. The distributing-roller 59 is reciprocated axially by means of a cam 77, Fig. 7, on a gear 75, which is coaxial with the gear 73 by means of which the roller 59 is driven through gears 72, 71, 70 from the cylinder 8. The gears 73, 75 are driven at slightly different speeds, and the engagement of the cam 77 with pins 78 fixed to a sleeve 81 which forms the periphery of the roller 59 gives a reciprocating motion to the roller. The roller 59 is adjustable relatively to the rollers 60, 61 by means of eccentrics 82, 83, operable by levers as 85, and locked in position by levers 85'. Each roller 60, 61 is mounted on a sleeve 87 supported by a ball race container 88 on a shaft 89. The sleeve 87 is secured to the container 88 by a screw stud 90 screwing into the container and passing through an aperture in the end face of sleeve 87.
