[Class 103 (i)] In a drum brake, particularly for aircraft, cooling is assisted by interposing an endless belt element between the drum and the friction element or brake shoes. The coefficients of friction of the drum, belt and friction elements are made such that when the brake is applied, the belt is carried around by the drum and is moved out of contact therewith so that it may be cooled by the slipstream. In Fig. 1, the belt 20 is shown interposed between the friction lining 10 and two externally contracting shoes 7 and 12, and is passed out of the brake assembly through a gate link 13 up the oleo strut, and round a guide member as shown in Fig. 6. The belt, which is preferably about 1 inch wide and 0.01 inch thick, may be made of a high thermal conductivity metal band, steel strips and copper gauze on cotton or asbestos fabric, endless metal wires in a side-by-side warp, or may comprise one or more belts of V-type. The belt has perforations with burrs which bite into a bonded asbestos covering on the drum. In Fig. 4, four smaller belts 24 are shown fitted side by side on the same drum, and spaced apart by metal dividing members 23. In Fig. 7 is shown a brake having both internal and external shoes, there being four belts 46, 47, 48 and 49 arranged so to encircle the individual shoes. Various other arrangements of the belts for both internal and external shoes are shown diagrammatically, including that in Fig. 15, in which the shoes 57 and 64 are radially applied and the belts are bands 58 and 65 of greater and less diameter than the drum 50.
