650,412. Rolling. LOEWY, E. July 1, 1948, No. 17756. Convention date, July 9, 1947. [Class 83 (iv)] A rolling-mill having backing and working rolls is accelerated to operating speed by positively applying torque to both backing and working rolls, the positive drive to the backing rolls being discontinued when a predetermined speed has been reached, and the work is rolled with the positive drive applied to the working rolls only. The backing rolls are positively re-connected to the working rolls during deceleration. The backing rolls 12, 13 are connected to working rolls 14, 15 through electromagnetic or mechanical clutches 30, 31, which are engaged by the pressing of a start button, disengaged by a centrifugal governor or electrical device, Fig. 2 (not shown), when the main drive motor 16 reaches the operating speed, and re-engaged when a stop button, which de-energizes the main drive motor, is pressed. A reset button is operated to de-energize the entire circuit. The system is stated to enable the speeds of rolling of metal foil to be increased to 3000 feet per minute..
