Abstract

650,232. Railway vehicle bodies. BUDD CO. Oct. 5. 1948. No. 25941. Convention date. Oct. 24, 1947. [Class 103(iv)] A diaphragm face plate for railway vehicle bodies comprises a frame surrounding a central passageway formed in the end wall of the body, a bottom horizontal buffer member, vertical side members secured thereto and an upper member interconnecting the tops of the side members, the side and top members of the frame being formed to a closed box cross-section having an integral edge flange for the attachment of a flexible diaphragm which closes the space between the side and top members of said frame and the adjacent end wall of the body. The face plate comprises a top member 25 and side members 24 and an angle section buffer member 16 which is pivoted at 17 to members 15 mounted on the vehicle underframe for resilient in and out movement. The member 25 also is resiliently mounted by means of a coil spring 18 seated respectively on the car end wall 11 and the member 25. Each member 24, 25 is formed from sheet metal into a closed triangular section member comprising a transverse face 27 and a longitudinal face 26 interconnected by an inclined face 28. At its lower end each member 24 fits over and is welded to an angle section post 23 welded to the horizontal flange 22 of the buffer member 16. Each lateral wall 27 of the members 24, 25 is extended outwardly and reversely flanged at 31 to provide an attachment for the flexible diaphragm 30 which is further secured to flanges 32 on the end wall 11. A wear plate 29 of the thickness of the metal of the walls 27 is welded to the outer vertical face 21 of the buffer 16.
