Abstract

544,368. Railway vehicle bodies and underframing. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G. Sept. 14, 1940, No. 14198. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1939. [Classes 103 (iv) and 103 (vi)] An end wall unit for railway vehicles comprises a flat plate extending from side to side and top to bottom of the body and an inwardly facing channel section end sill secured to the lower margin of the plate by which the unit is adapted to be secured to an underfame. In the construction shown the plate has a central door opening, a transverse reinforcement above the door opening and vertical collision posts secured to the outside of the plates. The end wall unit shown comprises a plate 10 which may be made up of a pair of side sections 15 and an upper section 16 surrounding a central door opening. The plate is reinforced on its inner side by an upper horizontal channel 13 and the end sill 14 to which it is spot-welded and on its outer side by a pair of collision posts 11 and channels 12. Each post 11 comprises members 21, 22 of channel and Z-section respectively and closing plates 23, 24. These plates and the adjacent channel 12 are continued at 69 below the sill 14 to which they are further secured by a short channel member 14<SP>1</SP>. The lower part of the posts is reinforced by an outer plate 31 and inner plates 25 welded thereto and by a series of inner channels 26 .. 30, the channel 26 having an inclined bottom wall to which the plate 23 is welded. The plate 10 may be further reinforced on its inside by Z-section members 36 to which an inner facing and a finishing panel 37 may be secured. Secured to the upper part of the posts 11 and to the plate 10, for supporting and guiding the usually movably mounted diaphragm face plate forming part of the passageway between coupled cars is a box-section structure comprising a channel 42 connected to the posts by plates 43 and angle members 46, upper and lower angle members 44, 45 welded to the member 42 and to the plate 10, and at the central part a pair of flanged diaphragms 47 secured to the parts 42, 44, 45, 10. An angle member 48 may be secured to the members 45 and plate 10 to form a further box-section structure and an inclined plate 49 be provided to present collection of dust on the member 44. The end-wall unit includes also for the attachment of the roof a channel 33 welded between the members 21, 22 of each post 11 and a channel 34 welded within and extending from the channel 33. The unit is secured by the sill 14 to the underframe members which comprise a pair of composite longitudinals 50 connected each to a box-section longitunal 51 by a sheer panel 52. These members abut the vertical wall of the sill and are secured thereto by angle and channel members 53, 54, 55. A buffer casting 56, Fig. 2, seats against the front face of the sill 14 between the posts 11 and has lateral extensions that overlap the front face of the posts and is rivetted to these posts. The extensions 69 of the posts 11 are tied to the longitudinals 51 through the coupler castings 70. In securing the unit to the side walls, the end posts 57, Figs. 2, 12, of these walls are welded to the margins of the plate 10 and to channel members 18 that close the ends of the sill 14 and to an angle member 40<SP>1</SP> secured to the ends of the transverse member 36. The roof comprises corrugated sheathing 63 which at the end parts is reinforced by a plate 64 that is welded to transverse frame members 61, 62 and to an angle member 20 on the edge of the plate 10. In the longitudinal plane of the posts 11 longitudinal members 65, 66, 67 and a plate 68 extend some distance inwardly from the plate 10, and the plate 68 is welded also to flanges 35 of the channel 34 thus securely tying the roof structure to the posts. In a modification, Fig. 17, not shown, the plate 10 has no reinforcement on the inside and it is flanged outwardly at one edge thus providing a space between the flange and the adjacent post 11 to receive the roller of a curtain for closing the space between the edges of the doorways of adjacent cars. At the other edge of the doorway a collapsable gate for closing the doorway is mounted.
