SMALL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION METAL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE METALLICJLATE YWALL 'ELEMENT Applicatin'mea september 24, 1928. sriai No. taor're.`
The invention relates Ato railway freight train cars and more particularly to metallic plate walls therefor, and consists informing an integral strut-beam adjacent one side margin of a metallic plate which is capable of sustaining considerablecompressive forces longitudinally of its length (as a column),
and also capable of sustaining forces normal to its length (as a beam.) ySuch a construction eliminates the beam and/or .post which is usually attached to one or more margins of a metallic plate when used asa wall.
Such a construction when used in house or roofed cars (such as box, automobile, stock, etc.,) would eliminate the use of corner post or door post, or if the strut-beamis positioned horizontally, would eliminate the use ofthe end plate or end sill. lWhen usedin'open top cars (gondola) the corner post could be dispensed with.' K p A further object is'to so form the integral strut-beam so as toV provide means of securing the nailing strip for the lining of the car.
Another obj ect is toprovide a metallic wall of a railway car with a specific form of integral flange, which flange performs the usual function ofl thel corner post, door post, end' plate or end vsill of a railway car.
In the drawings: f Fig. l shows a railway box car equipped with a typical application of my device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1".
- l Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a metallic f plate with one margin formed into an inte! gral strut-beam according to my invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the connections to the frame members.
In Figs. l to 4 inclusive the construction is shown applied to a box car wherein themetallicplate l forming the end wall of the car is formed with `al1-integral corner. -post adjacent each of its opposite vertical mar-v gins, which posts are secured to theupper side plates 2 and lower side sills'S, respectively,
on each side of the car, or other oppositely disposed frame members.
The end portions'ofI this integral post are Z shaped and each comprises a web 4, an inner flange 5 and an outer flange 6 with the webs and inner flanges merging together between the opposite ends of the integral post to form a'web 7 ,which web 7 is positioned ob# liquely to the originall plane of the plate l and to the outer flange 6. The contour of the Z shaped end portions of the post is longer than the contourv of the middle portion of the post (through the oblique web), therefore, when the enol wall is pressed from a rectangular plate the outer ilange'is longer adjacent the middle portion of the plate (8) than adacent the ends of' the post (9) as shown in Sucha construction provides avery strong column to resist stresses longitudinally of its length and furthermore `constitutes a veryV efficient beam to resist stresses normal toits length; y Therefore, such a formation provides very efficient corner post construction. In order to prevent the Vshape formationA from `opening up or becoming distorted under stress I attach the web .portionf4 .thereof tothe si'lljS and plate 2'by members 10 and 11, respectively. I `ralso' prefer to attach the outer flange 6 tovthefsill by memberzl2 and to. the plate by memberl 13 and further I attachthe inner flange 5 tothe sill by mem# ber 14 and to the plate by member l5. The flange adjacent the obliqueweb 7 is'also preferably attached to a girth or other'longitudin'al frame member ofthe car by gusset V16'. See Fig. 6 wherein thel sill and yplate are., omitted to .clarify the figure. .I 'y
TheV metallic plate is vpreferably formed with integral reinforcing embossments or coryrugations 80`to enable it to resistthe shifting ofthe vertical. siding is', secured.
` Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a metallic plate withone ymargin formed into an integralv corner'post according to kmy invention and clearlysh'ows the web 4, the inner flange 5 andthe outer flange 6 ofthe end portions CII of the corner post and also shows the oblique web 7 of the middle portion of the co-rner post and the wide flange.
My construction may be used to perform the functions of a door post, sill or plates of the car and still come within the scope of the invention.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though is to ybe understood that the invention is not limi-ted to theeXact details of construction shown and desribed, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof withinthe scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
l. In a railway car; the combination of oppositely disposed framing members, a metallic plate wall having an integral post formed at each opposite vertical margin with each of its ends secured to one of said framing members, the end portions of the post comprising a web, an inner flange and an' outer flange, said webs and said inner flanges merging together between the ends of the post to form a web positioned obliquely to the plate and the outer flange.
2. In a railway car; the combination of oppositely disposed framing members, a metallic plate wall having an integral Vpost formed at each opposite vertical margin with each of its ends secured to one of said framing members, the end portions of the post comprising a web, an inner `flange andan outer flange, said websv and said inner flanges merging together between the .ends of the post to vform a web positioned obliquelyto the plate and the outer flange, the outer flange being wider opposite the oblique. web than opposite the web before it is merged. with the inner flange.
3. In a railway car having a side sill and side plate, the combination of a metallic wall plate having an integral post extending between said sill and plate, said post comprising a web,and a flange, said web and flange Amerging. together between the ends of the post toform a web positionedobliquely to the plate and the flange, and means for attaching said web to said, sill and plate respectively. l
