unloading of automotive cars, trucks and the like. 5 Such an arrangement materially weakens the car framing to resist the service stresses. It is diificult to design an end frame of such a car and the doors themselves, as well as the attach- I merits therefor, so as to resist the weaving stresses 10 of the car in service andalso the shifting cargo and at the same time obtain a door which is easy to operate, waterproof and burglar-proof and which when open will give an opening equal in width to the inside width of the car. Such automobile cars are used in general service so must be capable of carrying various types of 'lading as Well as those mentioned above.
An object of the invention is to form the component parts of the frame surrounding the end door opening of as few parts as possible which is accomplished by making them of cast metal, thereby eliminating looseness 'or motion between the component parts which not only weakens the structure to resist the service stresses, but also permits leaks between the door and the adjacent frame. These leaks may permit the lading to escape and also permit rain, sparks and the like to enter the car.
Another object is to eliminate the cost and 30 delay in fabricating the numerous component parts of the present end frame which is composed of numerous fabricated and assembled .parts.
The vibration of the car in motion, due to rough and uneven tracks and steelwheels rolling on steel rails, set up constant vibrations and motions in the car which cause bolted and even riveted joints in the built-up sections to work loose, therefore, the railroads look with favor .upon any device which reduces the number .of parts and joints. This condition is increased by the introduction of longer freight trains and higher speeds in. present day railroading.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cast metal end sill, a cast metal end plate and cast metal corner post of a railway car, each of which elements have all the appurtenances .and fixtures cast integral therewith, such as, for .instance, the striking casting, push pole pocket-n the end'sill, brackets for the roof 'framemem'bers 0 on the end plate and hinge lugs .on'the corner post. "I have shown the end post, end sill, and end'plate as separate members, but 'it is understoodthat these four elements may be cast integrally together and stillcome within the scope of my invention.
Another object of the invention is 'to.form"the end frame of cast metal, w'hichhas a veryhigh resistance to corrosion, as compared to rolled steel or rolled iron.

The usual parts of the car are shown, such as side sill 2; floor 3; side wall '41; side plate 5;.side plate extension 6; ridge pole 7'; purlins'8and'sill step'9.
In the form of invention illustrated 'in'the accompanying drawings the end sill 10 comprises a vertical web 11 havingoutwardly projecting horizontal webs 12 and 13 to which the striking casting 14 may be secured. I also provide top horizontal 'web 16 and lower horizontal web '11? forming a channel section, which webs are attached to the .draft sill construction 18. at 1'9 and to the side sill 2 at 20 and 21. The end sill'isprovided with an integral push .pole ,pocket '23 and furthermore is provided with, an aperturej for the air brake train line '26 and also a support 2'7 forthe angle cock holder 28. ('SeeFig. 6.) .A verticalwall is extended upwardly at '31 and inwardly at32 to form athreshold for the door. 33, which is preferably inclined, as shown. The floor 3.is .fitted into this threshold, as shown in Fig. '3. Ialso preferably provide lugs'34 for the reception of the end d'oor lockingmeanssuch.asthat shown in Gilpin Patent No. 1,713,898, May21, 1929. I have shown the striking casting cast asa separate element, but it may be cast integral with the .end sill and still come within the scope of my invention. The coupler operating bracket'3'5. mayalso be cast integral with the end sill.
Fig. 4 shows how the upper and lower flanges respectively of the end sill are flared't'o .provide gussetsiB'Z for attachment totheiuppertand'lower flanges respectively of the side sill 2.
"The .end ,plate shown comprises .a boxlike structure consisting of .an upper (40) .and lower (41) horizontal wall and. a front '(42) ,and rear (43) vertical wall, which box-like structure is,provided with apertures 44for.mouldingpurposes, and as these apertures are positioned nearthe neutral axis of the section ftheyreduce the-weight of the end plate withpractically,.no.reduction of its strength. The water-table '46. is .cast integral 'with'th'e end plate and is sloped downwardly I. .7 a I s at its extremities to substantially conform to the diagonal gusset 47 for connection of the end plate to the corner post. The vertical wall 42 of the end plate is wider in a substantially vertical plane and overlies and is secured to the front portion '74 of the corner post '70. The end plate overlies the side plate and is secured thereto and is wider in a substantially horizontal plane adjacent the side plates and extends back far enough to assure a rigid connection and also a waterproof construction. The end plate is provided,
with a depending portion which overlies and is secured to the side portion '73 of the corner post '70. Brackets 50 are provided to support the longitudinal framing members of the roof, such as ridge pole '7 and purlins 8. In the form shown, the ridge pole '7 rests on top of the end plate. The vertical web 51 may be provided for attachment of a nailing strip 52 to which the roof sheet 53 may be secured, as shown in Fig. 11. Figs. 11 and 12 are vertical sections similar to Fig. 9 showing modified end plates.
Fig. 12 shows a modified form wherein a vertical Web is positioned adjacent the rear of the end plate and the roof sheet 61 is flanged downwardly and rigidly secured thereto by rivets 62. The bracket 64 may be provided to support the ridge pole '7. The flange 6O prevents the longitudinal shifting of the ridge pole '7. Each extremity of the end plate is provided with a pocket 63 into which a corner post flts, which preferably engages three sides of the post.
Thecorner posts '70 each comprise longitudinally extending channels or recesses 7l'72 and which is positioned to receive the door 33 when consist of a web '73, outer flange '74 and inner flange '75. The end door 33 preferably extends into the longitudinally extending recess or channel '72 when in closed position and is so arranged that the horizontal thrust of a shifting load is transmitted by the door to the outer flange '74, and furthermore, the longitudinally extending recess or channel is so positioned that when the door is in open position the open space between the doc-rs is equal to 'or greater than the door opening in the car. The side wall 4 of the car fits into the other recess '71. The hinge lugs '77 are cast integral with the outer flange. The in ner flange is provided with a reflange '78 for attachment of the side wall 4 of the car. The drawings show wooden sheathing boards bolted there- The inner flange '75 is also provided with a secondary reflange '76 which forms the other recess '71 for side wall of the car and protects the corner from being bruised or damaged by the lading. A wedge shaped seal is also provided which is slightly forced into the wooden door when in closed position so as to prevent egress of the lading; in other words, the corner post is provided with two longitudinally extending recesses '71'72 positioned normal toeach other, one of in closed position and the other of which provides a pocket for the side wall 4 of the car. I also'preferably provideladder brackets 81 integral with the corner post. The reflange '78 of the corner post is flared at its lower end (82) to provide additional connection to the side sill 2 of the car and the upper end of this reflange is flared (83) to provide additional connection to the side plate extension 6.
Figs. 13 to 21 inclusive show a modification wherein the end sill 90, corner posts 91 and end plate 92 are cast integrally together. In this form of my invention the draft sills 18, the side sills 2 and side plates 5 are connected to this integral casting in substantially the same way as heretofore described and the cross sections of the end sill 90, corner posts 91 and end plate 92 are the same as in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 12 inclusive, and furthermore, the hinge butts '77, water table 4'7, the integral pockets 34 for the door latches, the gussets 3'7 and 4'7, the corner post flanges 82 and 83, the striking part 14 of the end sill for the coupler horn, purlin pockets 50 are each and every one the same as heretofore described for the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 12 inclusive.
7 The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof, within the scope of the claims, will occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a railway car having an integral cast metal corner post having longitudinally extending recesses positioned normal to each other and laterally extending brackets, the combination of a door hinged adjacent one of said recesses so as to move in and out thereof, a side wall positioned within the other of said recesses, and ladder rungs attached to said brackets.
2. In a railway car having side plates and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical Walls.
3. In a railway car, having side plates and a unitary end plate comprising upper and lower horizontal walls and spaced apart vertical front and rear walls forming a box like structure.
4. In a railway car, having side plates and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal wall merging into a depending portion overlying and connected to the side plates.
5. In a railway car, having side plates, corner posts, and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal wall merging into a depending portion overlyingand connected to the side plates and the corner posts.
6. In a railway car, having side plates and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, one of said vertical walls overlapping the ends of the side plates.
'7. In a railway car having side plates corner posts, and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, one of said vertical walls overlapping the ends of the side plates and corner posts.
8. In a railway car, side plates, corner posts, doors hinged to said corner posts, and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, the outer of said vertical walls formed with an outwardly projecting flange forming a water table for the doors.
9. A corner post for a railway car consisting of an integral casting comprising longitudinally extending recesses positioned normal to each other, hinge lugs adjacent one of said recesses, and brackets arranged for attachment of a ladder rung thereto.
10. In a railway car, side plates and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal web merging into a depending portion overlapping and connected to the side plates, one of said vertical walls overlapping the ends of the side plates and merging intosaid depending'portion.
11. In a railway car, side plates, corner posts and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal web merging into a depending portion overlapping and connected to the side plates and the corner posts, one of said vertical Walls overlapping the ends of the side plates and corner posts and merging into said depending portion.
12. In a railway car, side plates and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal web having widened portions adjacent its opposite ends secured to the respective side plates.
13. In a railway car. side plates, corner posts and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, one of said vertical walls having a widened portion adjacent its opposite ends secured to the respective corner posts.
14. In a railway car, side plates, corner posts and a unitary end plate comprising a horizontal web and spaced apart vertical walls, said horizontal web having widened portions adjacent its opposite ends secured to the respective side plates and one of said vertical Walls having a widened portion adjacent its opposite ends secured to the respective corner posts.
15. In a railway car, the combination of spaced apart side plates, a pair of upright corner posts with their upper ends terminating adjacent said side plates, and a cast metal end plate secured to the side plates and provided with a pocket adjacent each end for reception of a corner post.
16. In a railway car, the combination of spaced apart side plates, a pair of upright corner posts with their upper ends terminating adjacent said side plates, and a cast metal end plate secured to the side plates and provided with a pocket adjacent each end for reception of a corner post which engages three sides of the post.
17. In a railway car, the combination of spaced apart side plates, a cast metal end plate having its opposite ends secured to the side plates and provided with an upstanding rib, and a roof having a depending flange secured to said rib.
18. In a railway car, the combination of spaced apart side plates, a cast metal end plate having its opposite ends secured to the side plates and provided with an upstanding rib, a longitudinally extending roof frame member secured to the end plate, and a roof supported by said frame member and having a depending flange secured to said rib.
19. An end frame for a railway car consisting of an integral casting comprising an end sill, an end plate, and spaced apart corner posts having their upper and lower ends integrally formed with the plate and sill, respectively, said posts each having a channel part and a flange, said channel part having hinge lugs and said flange having widened portions arranged for attachment to the side sill and side plates, respectively, of the car.
20. An end frame for a railway car consisting of an integral casting comprising an end sill hav- V ing a striking part for a coupler horn, flanges for attachment of draft sills, lower pockets for door latches, an end plate having upper pockets for door latches, spaced apart corner posts having their upper and lower ends integrally formed with the plate and sill, respectively, said posts each comprising a channel part and a flange, said channel part having hinge lugs and said flange having widened portions arranged for attachment to the side sill and side plate, respectively, of the car, a vertical gusset connecting each post to the end plate, and a horizontal gusset connecting each post to the end sill.
