Theinvention relates to railway freight train cars and more particularly to metallic plate walls therefor, and consists in forming an integral strut-beam adjacent one side margin of a metallic plate which is capable of sustaining considerable compressive forces longitudinally of its length (as a column) and also capable of sustaining forces normal to its length (as a beam). Such a construction eliminates the beam and/or post which is usually attached to one or more margins of a metallic plate when used as a wall.
Such a construction when used in house or roofed cars (such as box, automobile, stock,
1 etc.) would eliminate the use of corner post ordoor post, or if the strut-beam is positioned horizontally, would eliminate the use of the end plate or end sill. When used in open cars (gondolas) the corner post could .20 be dispensed with.
A further object is to so form the integral strut-beam so as to provide means of securing the nailing strip for the lining of the car.
Another object is to provide a metallic wall of a railway car with a specific form of in tegral flange, which flange performs the usual function of the corner post, door post, end plate or end sill of a railway car.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 shows a railway box car equipped with a typical application of my device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a metallic plate with one margin formed into an integral strut-beam according to my invention. Figs. 1 to 23 inclusive show my invention applied to a railway box car wherein the metallic plate 1 forming the end wall of the car is provided with an integral Z shape member or formation adjacent each of its opposite vertical margins, which members are secured to the upper side plates 2 and g lower side sills 3, respectively, on each side of the car, thus forming the usual corner post of the car; that is, the integral Z shape formation or members perform the functions of the usual corner post.
Each 2 shape member comprises a web 4,.
an outer flange 5 and an inner flange 6. Such a 2 construction provides a very strong column to resist stresses longitudinally of its length, and furthermore, constitutes a very efficient beam to resist stresses normal to its length. This statement is true whether such lateral stresses are parallel to the web (4) normal to the web or diagonal thereto. Therefore, such a Z shape formation forms a very efficient corner post construction.
In order to prevent the Z shape formation from opening up or becoming distorted under stress, I attach the web 4 of the Z construction to the plate 2 and sill 8, and I prefer to also attach the outer (5) and inner (6) flanges to both the sill and plate, respectively, to further guard against distortion of the Z construction.
The metallic plate is preferably formed with integral reinforcing embossments or corrugations 8 which I prefer to position parallel to the integral corner post and terminate them into the plate adjacent the upper end plate 9 and lower end sill 10, respectively. I also prefer to position the outer of these embossments (17) adjacent the corner post so as to eliminate any fiat portion of the plate between these elements and so that they will reinforce each other. I
Nailing strips are preferably inserted adjacent the 2 construction and also (12) within the corrugations 8 to provide means of attaching the end lining boards 13. A side nailing strip 14 is also provided within the Z shape construction to which the inner side lining 15 is secured and also to which the end board 16 of the vertical siding is secured.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a metallic plate with one margin formed into an integral corner post or Z shape construction according to my invention and clearly shows the web 4, the outer flange 5 and the inner flange 6.
My construction may be used to perform the functions of the door post, sills or plates of the car and still come within the scope of the invention.
The drawings illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited totlie exact detailsof'construction shown and described,
