Abstract
650,048. Extracting metals; treating ores. DUFFIELD, F. L. Dec. 9, 1947, No. 32494. [Class 82(i)] [Also in Group XII] Copper-containing sulphide ores are converted to blister copper by utilizing the heat of combustion of the sulphur and of the oxidation of any iron contained in the ore to convert the copper sulphides first to white metal and thence to blister copper, the action being carried out in a single horizontal cylindrical furnace, the sensible heat of the gases produced being applied to the ore charge prior to conversion. The ore, initially in a finely divided state may be agglomerated into lumps by the applied sensible heat and charged in its hot state to the converter. Ore mixed, where necessary, with fluxes such as silica is fed continuously to an agglomerating grate C, Figs. 1 and 2. The product from C is fed to a second moving grate E and from it directly to converted A over shoot E<SP>1</SP>. Feeding to the converter is interrupted only during pouring of slag from the converter and during the ultimate period of blowing the accumulated white metal to blister copper. During this latter period the movement of the grate E is reversed and preheated agglomerated ore is thus stored on grate E until such time as a fresh charge is required in the converter.
