Abstract
650,025. Electrostatic separators. QUAKER OATS CO. Dec. 17, 1946, No. 37189. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1945. [Class 72] An electrostatic method of cleaning coal comprises the steps of passing the material between and in closer proximity to one (38) than the other of a first pair of spaced electrodes, Fig. 6, which are maintained at a suitable difference of unidirectional potential, and passing at least one of the separated portions between and in closer proximity to one (40) than the other of a further pair of spaced electrodes which are maintained at a unidirectional potential difference opposite in their respective polarities to those of the first pair to produce a further separation. The electrodes preferably are continuously rotated; whilst the raw coal may be subject to the preliminary steps, Fig. 1, (not shown), of contact with a rotating knurled or otherwise roughened drum 12, and surface drying by means of a current of heated gas. U.S.A. Specifications 1,152,442, 1,153,182 and 2,428,224 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 519,817.
