Abstract

Porous substances are prepared from electrically-conducting aqueous dispersions of synthetic resins, particularly vinyl or acrylic resins, which can be converted into solid form by heat, by forming the dispersion into a froth, disposing the froth in a moulding cavity the inner surface of at least one wall, and preferably of at least two spaced walls of which is formed by porous non-conducting material containing a solution of an electrolyte, the electrolyte being in contact with the froth, and passing through the froth by way of the electrolyte an electric current of sufficient intensity to heat the froth and convert it to a porous substance, the material of which is solid. The porous material which contains the electrolyte may be in the form of a conveyor belt, and the electrode which carries current to the solution of electrolyte is in contact with the face of the porous material opposite to that with which the froth is in contact. Apparatus for carrying out the invention is described (see Group V).
