Abstract
649,865. Centrifugal pumps. MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1948, No. 22549. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1947. [Class 110(1)] Pure mercury or a liquid amalgam thereof enters the lower part of a pump chamber 1 and is given a motion of revolution about the vertical axis of the pump by means of an impeller blade 2 having substantially the shape of the vertical crosssection of the chamber, whereby it overflows over a rim 14 and under a trap 9 into a discharge trough 8. Excessive agitation of the mercury or amalgam, which might lead to oxidation and separation into a granular mass of discrete particles, is prevented by filling the space between its surface 13 and a cover 5 with water which is supplied and discharged through pipes 11, 12.
