Abstract

'[Class 80(i)] [Also in Groups VIII, XIII, XXX and XXXIV] A roller for use as a conveyer idler, rope or belt pulley and the like, comprises an envelope of plastics material carried by end members of natural or synthetic resilient material which form or are provided with bearings for the ends of the roller spindle. The Figure shows the application to a conveyer idler, the roller comprising an envelope b of, for example, fabric or paper-base phenolic tubing, carried by end members a of synthetic or natural rubber which are provided with bearings e for the spindle d comprising laminated fabricbase phenolic bushes. The bushes may be impregnated with graphite so as to be self-lubricating or they may be replaced by ball or roller bearings. Each end of the spindle d may, as shown at the right-hand side of the Figure, comprise a rod d with a collar d' inserted in the end of a tube d<SP>3</SP>, a nipple k<SP>1</SP> and passages m<SP>1</SP> being provided for admitting lubricant. The spindle may be provided with a central helical spring interposed between a pair of discs, the spring being compressed when lubricant is forced into the spindle and serving to push the lubricant through the passages m' to the bearings e during use.
