Abstract

649,175. Automatic current control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., STEVENS, S. A., and DUCKITT, H. July 6, 1948, No. 18164. [Class 38 (iv)] The voltage applied to an electro-plating vat rises in accordance with the vat current so as to maintain a constant current density over the surface of the work in the vat. The vat 1, Fig. 2, is supplied from a rectifier 10 connected by a transformer 6 and a voltage regulator 2 to a three-phase supply. The regulator is controlled by a relay 15, one coil 19 of which is energized by a voltage proportional to vat current, obtained from a current transformer 24; added to a reference voltage obtained from the supply mains via transformer 22; and opposed by a voltage proportional to the vat voltage, obtained from the output of the regulator across conductors 3, 4. The relay winding 20 connected between one phase and neutral of the supply provides a reference so that according to the resultant current in winding 19 one contact or the other will be closed if the vat voltage is greater or less than the sum of the other two voltages. In a modification, Fig. 3, a D.C. relay 26 is similarly energized by the rectified output of current transformers 37 added to the reference voltage of batteries 39, and opposed by the voltage across the vat terminals.
