Abstract
An abrading composition comprises a homogeneous mix of a crystalline mineral and potassium or sodium borofluoride, present as 6 to 12 per cent by weight of the mineral. Additional abrasives, 5 to 25 per cent by weight of the mineral, which may be present are diamond, or a mixture of diamond (may be as boart) boron carbide and silicon carbide. Specified minerals are garnet, beryl, topaz, corundum, agate, granite, andalusite, sillimanite, or fused alumina.ALSO:An abrasive article comprises a homogeneous mixture of a crystalline abrasive mineral and sodium or potassium borofluoride. It is made by mixing the previously-crushed mineral with the borofluoride, placing the mix in a mould, applying cold pressure, heating above the melting-point of the borofluoride but below 600 DEG C., repressing and cooling. As crystalline minerals are specified garnet, beryl, topaz, corundum, agate, granite, andalusite, sillimanite, or fused alumina. The proportion of borofluoride varies between 6 and 12 per cent by weight of the mineral. An additional abrasive, 5 to 25 per cent of the mineral, may also be present-such additions specified are diamond, or a mixture of diamond (may be as boart), boron carbide and silicon carbide.
