648,923. Shot-gun cartridges. PAULVE, M. L. A. March 2, 1948, No. 6566. Convention date, April 25, 1947. [Class 9 (i)] A metal cartridge case 1 is closed by forming folds or pleats 3 at the edge and applying a crimping tool 4 to press the pleats together, a plastic plug 8 being extruded between the pleats from an axial bore in the tool. The socket in the tool has a convex end wall united to the cylindrical wall of the socket by a torus of large radius, so that as the tool is forced downwards the pleats are forced inwards to form a concave closure united to the cylindrical wall by a torus 9 of large radius. As the pleats are forced together the plug is squeezed into the interstices between the pleats forming a moisture-proof seal. The plug material may be a thermo-plastic substance such as natural or synthetic rubber extruded in a pasty form or as a thread. The cylindrical wall of the case may have one or more grooves 10 in which are distinctive markings indicating number of shot and type of charge in the case.
