Abstract

For making filaments, fibres, threads, &c. interpolyesters are made by heating together (a) a preformed polyester obtained by condensing a di-ester of a monocarboxylic acid and hydroquinone with a o ,o 1-dicarboxylic acid, terephthalic acid, p-carboxyphenoxyacetic acid, p,p1-dicarboxyphenoxy ethane, or a bifunctional ester-forming derivative of such an acid (as described in Specification 636,429), and (b) a preformed polyester obtained, according to Specification 604,985 and 641,320, by the autocondensation of aromatic compounds having the general formula <FORM:0648513/IV (a)/1> in which A is a hydrogen or acyl group, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, m is an integer from 1 to 4 and n is an integer from 0 to 4. The intercondensation may be effected at 200-280 DEG C. under reduced pressure and in an oxygen-free atmosphere such as hydrogen or nitrogen. Examples describe the preparation of a polymeric hydroquinone sebacate and b -(p-carboxy-phenoxy)-ethanol and their intercondensation. Specification 621,102 also is referred to.
