Abstract

Filament-forming polyesters, having a wide softening range and improved dyeability are made by polycondensing the esterification product prepared from (a) terephthalic acid or ester-forming derivative (e.g. the dimethyl ester), (b) ethylene glycol and (c) a p-omega-hydroxyalkyl benzoic acid of the formula: <FORM:0854171/IV(a)/1> where n = 1-4 or ester-forming derivative (e.g. the methyl ester); the polycondensation being effected at about 275 DEG C. and a pressure not exceeding about 2 mm. of Hg. Thus the monomer formed from components (a) and (b) may be polycondensed either with component (c) or with the monomer formed from components (b) and (c). Preferably the mol ratio of component (a) to component (c) is at least 90 : 10.
