Abstract

648,298. Making containers. STUART, K., and STUART, E. R. B. Jan. 16, 1948, No. 1378. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Binding and covering mandrels.-A method of applying a rim to containers &c. comprises rotating the container and feeding a metal strip in a plane perpendicular to the axis of of rotation of the container and continuously bending and applying the strip by rollers &c. A rim strip 162 of J-section is fed with a flat side 168 in contact with the top edge of a container 163 and is applied to the rim 164 of the container on a platform, not shown, by rollers 172, -173 which bend the strip C-shape to effect clinching. The strip may be preformed by shaped rolls and may be angularly curved by adjustable rollers or by a flat mandrel, Fig. 8 (not shown). The strip may be used for joining the cover and the body of a container. Specification 648,266, [Group XVII], and U.S.A. Specification 2,283,962 are referred to.
