Abstract

1,258,696. Abrasive tools. NORTON CO. 15 May, 1970 [16 May, 1969], No. 23730/70. Heading B3I). An endless belt comprises an abrasive coating on a backing and having an overlapping joint, at least some of the coating 6 being removed from the backing 5 at the inner belt end at the overlap 3, and at least some of the coating 8 being removed from a length b of the backing 7 of the outer belt end less than the length a of the overlap. The joint may be at an angle of 55 to 75 degrees to the length of the belt which may have a width of 2À6 m. and a length of 3À8 m. The belt consists of a coating of abrasive grains on a linen backing, and the coating 8 of the upper end 2 is removed for a distance b of 30 to 80% of the length a of the overlap. For example b may equal 5 mm. and a, the length of coating removed from the inner end 1 may equal 10 mm. The ends of the belt may be joined by glue. In another embodiment, the thickness of the coatings is reduced to bring the coatings flush.
