Abstract

647,755. Hydraulic turbines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Dec. 17, 1948, No. 32689. [Class 110(iii)] In a hydraulic turbine in which water passes from an outer surrounding space to a distributer ring of pivoted vanes for the load control of the turbine, an independent system of auxiliary shutters is interposed therebetween, and consists of swivelling vanes 4 alternating with fixed stay vanes 3, the swivelling vanes having strips of resilient material 8 along the leading and trailing edges to form a seal when bearing against the concave and convex surfaces of the adjacent stay vanes in the closed position. and the swivelling vanes are also sealed against the speed rings 1, 2 or parts connected therewith by metalto-metal joints. The servomotor piston 20 in the cylinder 17 operates two swivelling vanes through the levers 14 keyed to the shafts 13 of the vanes and the links 15 connected to the servomotor piston rod 16. The swivelling vanes may be locked in either the open or closed positions by interposing the split ring 21 between the projection 24 on the lever 14 and the adjacent end of the servomotor cylinder. In the closed position, the swivelling vanes may be pressed downwardly by the piston 10 slidable in the upper speed ring 1 to form a seal against metal ledges 9 on the lower speed ring 2. The bolts 11 secured to the piston 10 are screwed into the cover plate 7 which closes an opening through which the swivelling vane 4 can be inserted. Specification 446,359 is referred to.
