Abstract

A paint or varnish constituent consists of tall oil esterified with pentaerythritol in the presence of dehydrated castor oil. Paints or varnishes prepared with this material do not remain tacky after drying as is stated to be the case with paints &c. made from tall oil esterified with pentaerythritol and subsequently mixed with dehydrated castor oil. Preferably an excess of 10 to 30 per cent in the amount of pentaerythritol theoretically required to reduce the acid value of the tall oil to the desired extent is used. In an example, Swedish tall oil is heated with dehydrated castor oil and pentaerythritol in the presence of zinc oxide as catalyst to 265 DEG C. for four hours in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The pale viscous product is dissolved in white spirit to form a varnish. Other varnish oils such as linseed, stand oil, tung oil, and oiticica oil, may be added to the reaction mixture together with additional resins such as glycerine ester gum, pentaerythritol ester gum, copal glycerine ester, or a rosin-modified phenolic resin. A paint is described containing zinc oxide, varnish constituent as above, white spirit, cobalt-linoleate and lead naphthenate.ALSO:A paint or varnish constituent consists of tall oil esterified with pentaerythritol in the presence of dehydrated castor oil.
