Abstract
A protective coating composition for corroded metal comprises an organic solvent solution of (1) a film-forming air-drying, weather resistant coating material whose air drying properties are due to the presence therein of esterified drying or semi-drying glyceride oil fatty acids (2) dispersed pigment including an anti-corrosive pigment and (3) a wetting additive which is at least one ester of (a) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol having up to 8 carbon atoms and (b) triglyceride drying or semi-drying oil fatty acids optionally containing a small amount of rosin acids or natural varnish resin acids. Specified components (1) are the oleo-resinous varnishes, various modified alkyds, phenolaldehyde condensates and mixtures thereof, epoxy esters, drying and semi-drying triglyceride oils and mixtures of these oils with alkyd resins, and mixtures of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers with oil modified alkyd resins a paint oil prepared from rosin, tung oil and dipentene is also mentioned. Wetting additives mentioned are methyl linoleate, butyl linoleate, butyl esters of tall oil, 2-ethylhexyl esters of tall oil, methyl esters of linseed oil acids, ethyl esters of soya bean oil acids, butyl esters of linseed oil acids and butyl esters of unsaturated C18 acids. Numerous protective coating compositions are described and these include various synthetic resinous film-formers which may be mixed with raw or bodied linseed oil, tung oil or soya bean oil fatty acids pigments zinc chromate, lead chromate, calcium chromate, barium chromate, strontium chromate, zinc tetroxy chromate, lead silico chromate, chromium oxide, chrome orange, litharge, red lead, blue lead, basic white lead carbonate, calcium plumbate, zinc oxide, zinc dust, aluminium paste, iron oxide (88% Fe2O3), yellow oxide of iron, metallic brown, magnesium silicate, kieselguhr, silica powder, modified bentonite, barytes, asbestine, rutile, antimony black, carbon black, lamp black, phthalocyanine blue and green solvents diacetone alcohol, T.S.28 solvent, mineral spirits, xylol, isopropyl alcohol, high flash coal tar naphtha other constituents diammonium monohydrogen phosphate, lead, manganese, cobalt and zinc driers, mixed rosin soap driers, guiacol, lecithin, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, aluminium stearate, diphenyl mercury dodecenyl succinate. Top coat compositions are also described.ALSO:A protective coating composition for corroded metal comprises an organic solvent solution of (1) a film-forming, air-drying, weather resistant coating material whose air-drying properties are due to the presence therein of esterified drying or semi-drying glyceride oil fatty acids (2) dispersed pigment including an anti-corrosive pigment and (3) a wetting additive which is at least one ester of (a) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monohydric alcohol having up to 8 carbon atoms and (b) triglyceride drying or semi-drying oil fatty acids optionally containing a small proportion of rosin acids or natural varnish resin acids. Specified components (1) are the oleo-resinous varnishes oil modified alkyl resins which may be additionally modified with acidic varnish resins phenol-aldehyde condensates modified with triglyceride drying or semi-drying oils with or without acidic varnish resins blends of said alkyd resins and said phenol-aldehyde resins optionally with drying or semi-drying triglyceride oils epoxy esters, i.e. epoxy resins of the bis-phenol/epichlorhydrin types which have been reacted with unsaturated drying or semi-drying oil fatty acids (with or without rosin acids, resin acids and/or saturated fatty acids) to give full esters having substantially zero epoxy and/or hydroxy equivalents drying or semi-drying triglyceride oils mixtures of said triglyceride oils with said alkyd resins and mixtures of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers with oil modified alkyd resins. Wetting additives mentioned are methyl linoleate, butyl linoleate, butyl esters of tall oil, 2-ethylhexyl esters of tall oil, methyl esters of linseed oil acids, ethyl esters of soya bean oil acids, butyl esters of linseed oil acids and butyl esters of unsaturated C18 acids. Numerous protective coating compositions are described and these include film-formers raw linseed oil, bodied linseed oil, tung oil, soya bean oil fatty acids alkyds prepared from (i) glycerine/phthalic anhydride/distilled linseed oil fatty acids (ii) soya bean oil/pentaerythritol/phthalic anhydride and (iii) alkali refined linseed oil/pentaerythritol / glycerine / phthalic anhydride phenolic resins prepared from (i) tung oil, paraphenyl phenol and formaldehyde (ii) phenolformaldehyde resin, oil soluble alkylated phenolformaldehyde resin, china wood oil, heat bodied linseed oil-china wood oil and (iii) para-tert. amyl phenol-formaldehyde resin, an oil soluble phenolic resin, tung oil, kettle bodied linseed oil dehydrated castor oil acid ester of a bisphenol/epichlorhydrin polyether and a paint oil prepared from rosin tung oil and dipentene: pigments zinc chromate, lead chromate, calcium chromate, barium chromate, strontium chromate, zinc tetroxy chromate, lead silico chromate, chromium oxide, chrome orange, litharge, red lead, blue lead, basic white lead carbonate, calcium plumbate, zinc oxide, zinc dust, aluminium paste, iron oxide (88% Fe2O3), yellow oxide of iron, metallic brown, magnesium silicate, kieselguhr, silica powder, modified bentonite, barytes, asbestine, rutile, antimony black, carbon black, lamp black, phthalocyanine blue and green: solvents diacetone alcohol, T.S.28 solvent, mineral spirits, xylol, isopropyl alcohol, high flash coal tar naphtha: other constituents diammonium monohydrogen phosphate, lead, manganese, cobalt, and zinc driers, mixed rosin soap driers, guiacol, lecithin ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, aluminium stearate, diphenyl mercury dodecenyl succinate. Top coat compositions are also described. Addition polymer compositions. In the examples top coat II contains a vinyl chloride/dialkyl maleate/monoalkyl maleate/trichloroethylene tetrapolymer as described in Example 1 of U.S.A. Specification 2,731,449. Other ingredients are an alkyd resin in xylol coal tar naphtha diacetone alcohol an epoxy resin stabilizer a titanium dioxide-alkyd resin paste lecithin and dimethyl silicone.
