[Class 100 (ii)] In a machine for printing on blanks of boots, shoes &c. wherein a base, presenting a marking table 10 and an inking pad carrier 11 in a plane higher than the table 10, supports a platen 17 connected thereto by parallel motion linkage 16, the tension spring means such as 22, provided to restore the platen to mid-position from the inking or marking positions, is so arranged as to store energy to cause the platen when freed from one extreme position to rebound to the other. As shown, two springs 22, within the base and each near one of its sides, act on ears 201 extending from sleeves secured to a shaft 15 rigidly connected to the rear members of the linkage 16; the springs may be adjusted by nuts 24; the platen is moved by its hand bar 172 to the marking position shown in chain lines, and on release the springs 22 withdraw it sufficiently fast for its inertia to carry it over to the inking pad 13 from which it returns to the mid position ready for the next marking stroke. Additional springs may be arranged to act on the shaft 14. In a modification the springs 22 are outside the base and are connected to eccentric pins on plates clamped to the rear members of the linkage 16. In a further modification springs attached to both the pivot pins 171 on each side of the platen extend downwardly and toward each other to the tops of posts upstanding from lateral extensions of the base, these posts being set closer together than the shafts 14, 15 and being offset laterally to each other to avoid fouling of the springs. According to the second Provisional Specification bolts screwed radially into the shaft 15 replace the ears 201 and their sleeves.
