[Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (c)] In an electronic switching device an electrode f reduces the scanning beam to approximately zero velocity near the targets s1 ... s4 connected to individual signal channels so that it is repelled to a variable extent depending on the potential of each target. The returning electrons may be multiplied in a multiplier v surrounding the electron gun c, and focusing is aided by a coil m. The targets s1 ... s4 connected to the signal channels may be arranged in a straight line or in a circle. The temperature of the gun cathode is reduced to limit the velocity range of emission so that the required modulating voltages on s1 ... s4 are less than normal and also to produce a low intensity beam, a strong output signal nevertheless being obtained due to the electron multiplier v. Screens are inserted between the targets s1 ... s4 to reduce cross-talk to a minimum. A. known type of commutator operating by secondary emission is referred to (Fig. 1, not shown).
