Abstract

646,449. Tubular heat-exchange elements. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., BEAUCHAMP, G. H., and LOVELL, W. H. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29069. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Group XXII] A heating and/or cooling chamber for heat-exchange devices, having a number of wires located within the chamber is formed by precision casting and the wires are secured to the chamber during the casting process. Fig. 1 shows a wax-casing 1 of wedgeshaped cross-section in which wires 3 are embedded transversely to the direction of flow of fluid within the chamber. To form the chamber a metal die is filled with molten wax, which when set is removed from the die. The wires being inserted in the wax model with their ends protruding, the wax is sprayed with a refractory coating such as sodium or ethyl silicate and placed in a moulding box, the normal investments used in casting, comprising a high refractory such as sellimanite being introduced. During filling the model is preferably vibrated. Upon melting of the wax the wires are left embedded in the mould the inner surface of which is the refractory coating of the wax model. The mould is then baked and afterwards filled with molten metal which upon solidification forms the casting of the chamber in which the wires are embedded. Projecting ends of the wires may be trimmed off. Fluids may be passed through the chamber or the chamber may be closed at one end and provided with an inclined baffle 5 to promote circulation. Heat transfer fins may be provided on the external wall of the chamber.
