[Class 35] A self-exciting electrostatic generator is excited through a unidirectionally conductive device to ensure build-up in the correct polarity. In the form shown, the earthed brush e<SP>1</SP> of the exciting generator a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> is connected through a gas-filled photo-electric caesium cell h, i permitting current flow in one direction only, such that the ball g is negative. In a modification for making the ball positive, a thermionic diode is inserted between the brush e<SP>1</SP> and earth. Specification 643,579 is referred to.
