Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure the high density for the ion flow, by providing a converging electrode between a corona wire and an ion flow modulating electrode to converge the ion flow and realize the high density for the ion flow. CONSTITUTION:A converging electrode 15 is provided between a corona ion generator 5 and an ion flow modulating electrode 4. Then the potential is applied to the electrode 15 from a DC power supply 16, or a resistance is connected between the electrode 15 and an earth to ensure the self-bias. This potential is preferably set at a middle level compared with the potential to be applied to a corona wire 5a. The electrode 15 forms an electric field that converges the ion flow generated by the generator 5 and also functions to form an ion generating electric field at an area near the wire 5a. In this connection, the electrode 15 and the wire 5a are set with a comparatively short distance between them, and the ion generating electric field is preferably set at a high level. The electrode 15 is separated from the wire 5a by 1-5mm., and V1-V2=3-8kV is preferably satisfied to the potential V1 of the wire 5a.
