Abstract
645,449. Reinforced concrete. HOLE, E. R., and CONCRETE DEVELOPMENT CO., Ltd. April 5, 1948, No. 9454. [Class 20(iv)] Concrete reinforcement is pre-stressed without the use of ground anchorages by incorporating it as part of a closed balanced lever system including variable tension means on one side imposing stresses which are absorbed by the reinforcement. Reinforcing wires 3 for a concrete beam &c. cast in a mould 1 are pre-stressed by means of levers 9 fulcrummed on end brackets 6 of a strut 4 extending longitudinally of the wires and tensioned by rods 12 and a hydraulic jack 13. The strut may be extensible for use with varying lengths of beam. For utilizing a part of the structure to be moulded itself as the strut, a beam which may not be reinforced is moulded of the appropriate section for that portion intended mainly to operate under compression and an opensided mould placed against it for the reinforced portion. Fulcrum abutments for the tensioning levers may be removably fitted to the precast portion or directly provided by the ends of the concrete itself.
