Abstract

645,364. Variable speed gearing. SHAUGHNESSY, T., W. Sept. 19, 1947, No. 25534. [Class 80(ii)] A bicycle variable-speed chain gearing comprises an expanding rear sprocket wheel formed of four segments B, each having on one side thereof axial pins F engaging slots V in a flange C having ratchet teeth by which drive is conveyed through pawls G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>3</SP>, a flange P and an extension R to the rear wheel hub (not shown), and on the other side thereof an axial pin O engaging a slot A in another flange C<SP>3</SP> held stationary on back pedalling by pawls G. G<SP>4</SP> to effect radial movement of the segments B. The flanges C, C<SP>2</SP> run on ball bearings D<SP>2</SP>, D respectively; and pins Y engaging the rear fork of the bicycle (not shown) hold a flange W stationary. The chain is tensioned by running between two rollers I whose spindles K, mounted in a frame L, M, are acted upon by a tension spring J.
