Abstract
644,927. Portable turning apparatus. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1947, No. 30624. [Class 83 (iii)] A jig for an end-cutting tool for removing the projecting heads of rivets or similar fastenings comprises a guide bush 13 having a locating hole 15 adapted to receive the end-cutting tool and the head of the rivet and having a resilient pad 12 which is pressed against the surface from which the rivet projects by the cutting pressure on the tool. The end-cutting tool 6 is fitted to a drill 5 comprising a casing 22 and a flange 23 to which is screwed an outer sleeve 24 and within which an inner sleeve 11 slides against the action of a spring 26. An end cap 9 is adjustable on the sleeve 11 and has a step 10 which is a predetermined distance from the end of the tool 6; the cap may be adjustable on the sleeve or may have a lock-nut constituting the step 10. The metal bush 13 of the jig has a stepped hole 15 and a rubber pad 12 with a roughened lower surface is bonded to it, the lower face of the bush being slightly set back from the lower surface of the pad. In use, the jig is placed over the head of a rivet 20 and the cap 9 on the drill is engaged in the hole 15, the end of the tool just entering the smaller part of the hole 15. Axial pressure on the drill then causes the inner sleeve to retract, allowing the tool to advance until lock-nuts 25 contact the outer sleeve 24, at which time the rivet head has been cut down flush with the plate surface. The spring is compressed during the cutting operation and holds the jig against the plate surface.
