644,587. Supply systems depending on variable-speed generators; automatic voltage control systems ; connecting. LEECENEVILLE CO. May 2, 1947, No. 11842. Convention date, May 20, 1946. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A motor vehicle or like electric supply system of the kind wherein an engine-driven alternator supplies a battery and other loads through a rectifier includes the following features: (1) forced cooling of the rectifier by the engine-cooling fan, or by a separate fan electrically driven; (2) automatic voltage control by a vibratory regulator of the multicontact type operating on the excitation of the alternator which is obtained over the rectifier; (3) a load limiting arrangement comprising either current-operated vibratory contacts controlling the alternator excitation, or reactors in the A.C. circuit (the alternator may purposely have a high internal reactance to render external reactors unnecessary); and (4) the provision of a switch, which may operate conjointly with the ignition switch of the engine, whereby the battery may energize a series circuit comprising (a) a load relay for closing the battery-rectifier circuit, and (b) an electric motor for driving a cooling fan for the rectifier. The alternator may be of the 3-phase type and feed the load through a bridge rectifier. Specification 644,586 is referred to.
