644,158. Rail-vehicle bodies; vehicle seating arrangements. BUDD CO. Jan. 27, 1948, No. 2402. Convention date, July 29, 1947. [Classes 103(ii) and 103(iv)] A railway passenger car comprises a main lower floor and a roof and side walls interconnecting said floor and roof, an upper gallery floor extending substantially from end to end of the car, stairways leading from said lower floor to the upper floor, and seating accommodation for passengers arranged along the side walls of the car on both said floors and for substantially the full length thereof, a passageway or corridor being provided along the gallery floor adjacent a centre aisle to interconnect the gallery seats. The lower floor comprises end platforms 11 at normal height to enable the car to be coupled to other cars of like or different construction and is formed with vestibules 12 and side entrance doors 13. Between the platforms 11 the floor level is lowered as at 17 and along each side wall 19 is arranged a row of double seats 20, adjacent windows 18, and separated by an aisle 21. Above the seats 20 at each side of the car are arranged gallery floors 23 secured along their outer edges to the walls 19 and supported on their inner margins by stanchions 24 interconnected by longitudinal rails 27 and panels 28. Each gallery floor carries a row of single seats 25, each positioned adjacent upper windows 26 and spaced from the members 27, 28 by a passageway 29, access to which is provided by stairs 31. 32, adjacent each platform 11. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) only a short central portion at the extremity of each floor is raised to accommodate the buffer, the lower and gallery floors 17, 23 being extended to the ends of the car, which is entered by central double doors flanked by steps leading to the gallery floors. The doors may be flanked by panels extending to the roof in which case the gallery steps are located at the ends of the aisle 2 (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). In a further arrangement (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) two sets of double doors may be positioned one-third of the length of the car from each end and flanked by steps which divide the gallery floors into six portions. To dispense with the stanchions 24, the panels 28 may be formed as a continuous beam to support the inner margins of the floors 23 and may be offset inwardly to widen the upper portions of the gallery passages.
